Educational Dynamix and Cobb PLC Form Service Project to Raise CRCT Scores at Labelle Elementary School

ATLANTA, GA - March 3, 2009- Educational Dynamix, an educational services firm that focuses on the learning and development of educators and children through innovative and engaging programs and services, announced today that the Cobb Performance Learning Center (PLC) will employ Musical Mathematics to deliver a service learning project with students at Labelle Elementary School. Students at the Cobb PLC are required to engage service learning projects as part of their curriculum.

"Service learning projects are very different from community service programs in that there is always an academic component that is aligned with the state-prescribed standards," explains Jacquelyn Whitt, Principal and Academic Coordinator for Cobb PLC.

In this case, the project is aligned with performance standards for mathematics among others. After several weeks of training with Musical Mathematics program founder, Dr. Clemmie Whatley, 14 high school students entered the classrooms at Labelle Elementary School earlier this month.

"Although math has been a challenge for many of our students, now they are enjoying reinforcing their own skills by teaching the younger students and helping them prepare for their CRCTs," continued Whitt. "This has been a great way to make the learning meaningful for both groups."

At Labelle Elementary School, 31.2% of their third graders failed the mathematics section of the 2008 CRCT exam. With the help of PLC students and Musical Mathematics, Labelle hopes to be able to boost their 2009 scores above last year's state-wide average where 71% of third grade students met or exceeded the standards set for mathematics.

"As a proud Partner in Education with the Cobb Performance Learning Center, we are excited to find new ways to promote learning among students of all age groups," stated Dr. Clemmie Whatley, president of Educational Dynamix. "This exercise has really helped demonstrate how our lessons originally designed for elementary-age students can help learners of all ages master the mathematic skills they need."

About the Cobb Performance Learning Center

The Cobb PLC provides high schools students in Cobb County who are not succeeding in the traditional school setting another option to learn in a small learning community, where each student has a mentor, participates in job shadowing and  internship opportunities and is required to complete a service learning project. Performance Learning Centers are established through a partnership with local school districts and Communities In Schools, the nation’s leading community-based organizations helping kids succeed in schools and prepare for life. In Georgia, 51 Communities in Schools local network affiliates provide services to nearly 100,000 students in 67 school systems with a specific goal to increase attendance, academic achievement and high school graduate rates while decreasing violence and disruptions.
